How it works

Your photo is decoded onto a canvas and re-encoded as JPG at the quality you choose. Lower quality removes fine detail the eye barely notices, which is where most of the savings come from. Capping the dimensions saves even more: a 12-megapixel phone photo resized to 1920 px is usually under 500 KB.

Re-encoding also drops embedded metadata such as EXIF and GPS location.

FAQ

What quality should I use?

70–80% is the sweet spot for photos on the web. Go to 85–90% for printing, and below 60% only for thumbnails.

Why is my file bigger after compression?

The original was already heavily compressed. Lower the quality or the maximum size, or keep the original.

Does it remove EXIF data?

Yes. The canvas only keeps pixels, so camera details and GPS location are not copied to the compressed file.
