How it works

Every character has a Unicode code point (é = U+00E9, 😀 = U+1F600). Languages write it differently: JavaScript and JSON use \u00E9, but characters above U+FFFF need two “surrogate” escapes (\uD83D\uDE00) — or \u{1F600} in modern JavaScript. HTML uses é and CSS \E9. By default only non-ASCII characters are escaped, which keeps code readable.
