How it works

Percentage decrease = (original value − new value) ÷ original value × 100. From 120 to 90 the decrease is 30 ÷ 120 = 25%. To decrease a number by a percentage, multiply it by (1 − percentage ÷ 100): 250 − 20% = 250 × 0.8 = 200.

FAQ

How do I find the original value before a decrease?

Divide the new value by (1 − percentage ÷ 100). After a 20% drop to 200, the original was 200 ÷ 0.8 = 250.
