How it works

A canonical URL is the one version of a page you want search engines to index. The same content is often reachable through http and https, with or without www, with tracking parameters or different letter cases; without a canonical tag, ranking signals get split across these duplicates. The tool applies the rules you choose (scheme and host are always lowercased, default ports and #fragments removed) and outputs both the <link rel="canonical"> tag and the equivalent HTTP header for PDFs and other files.
