How it works
The dominant color is the largest group of similar pixels (found with k-means clustering); the average color is the mean of all pixels. They often differ: a photo of a red car on gray asphalt has a gray dominant color but a brownish average.
FAQ
Which one should I use as a placeholder?
The dominant color usually matches the image's overall feel better; the average is smoother for blurry placeholders.
