How it works
A salt is a random value combined with a password before hashing, so two users with the same password get different hashes and precomputed “rainbow tables” become useless. It doesn't need to be secret, but it must be unique per password: 16 random bytes (128 bits) is the usual recommendation. Most libraries (bcrypt, Argon2) generate it for you — this tool is for testing and custom setups.
